Concrete walls showed water stains near the floor, and the air in the feed looked thick with dust.

In the center of the frame stood two large cardboard boxes.

I recognized them immediately by the blue packing tape I had used.

They were the smart kitchen appliances I had cleared out of our condo before the locks were changed—the smart oven and the high-end espresso machine.

Both had built-in GPS and Wi-Fi receivers linked to my master account.

“What am I looking at?” Marisol asked, leaning closer to the screen.

Her breath smelled of the mints she kept in her desk drawer.

“Those are my appliances,” I said.

“The ones you took from the kitchen?”

“Yes,” I said. “I stored them in my temporary unit, but they aren’t there anymore.”

“Did Derek find your storage unit?” Marisol’s voice tightened.

“He must have,” I said. “Or Stephanie did. They had a spare key to my old car, and the gate code was written on a pad in the glovebox.”

I watched the screen as a shadow cut across the camera’s field of view.
