“Can we find out where he is using it?” Marisol asked.
“The app tracks the physical location of the device for weather updates,” I said.
“But it only updates the location when it establishes a stable internet connection.”
“Is it connected now?” Marisol asked, leaning closer.
“It is trying to connect,” I said. “It is bouncing between a cellular hotspot and a local network.”
I watched the signal strength icon flicker on my screen.
One bar. Then two. Then zero.
“He must be in an area with bad reception,” I said.
“Or he is inside a building with thick walls,” Marisol suggested.
I looked out the window again.
The sky was beginning to turn a pale shade of orange as the afternoon faded.
My mind raced, trying to figure out where Derek would go with stolen smart home gear.
He did not have the money to rent a new luxury apartment on his own.
Not unless he had already stolen more from my accounts than I realized.
“Did the bank say how much he withdrew before they froze the accounts?” I asked.
