He always complained when the lights did not turn on with a physical switch.

But he loved the luxury of having a smart refrigerator and a connected security hub.

When I left the condo, I had taken the main control hub with me in a cardboard box.

It was currently sitting in the trunk of my car.

But several of the connected smart plugs and the smart thermostat were still at the condo.

Or, at least, I thought they were.

I tapped the network diagnostic tool inside the app.

A small spinning wheel appeared on the screen as it searched for connected devices.

“Marisol,” I said, my voice barely a whisper.

“Yes?” she asked, looking up from her keyboard.

“He isn’t at the condo,” I said.

“How do you know?” she asked.

“The smart thermostat is online,” I said. “But the IP address is different.”

“What does that mean?” she asked, walking back over to my side of the desk.

“It means he took the thermostat off the wall and moved it,” I said.

“Why would he take a thermostat?” she asked.
