“Unauthorized login attempt: SmartHub-7700,” I read aloud.

Marisol leaned over the desk, her silver bracelets clinking against the polished wood.

“What is it?” she asked.

“It is the smart home system from the condo,” I said. “The one I set up last year.”

I tapped the screen, opening the security portal.

My hands shook slightly, the tight, pink scar tissue across my knuckles pulling uncomfortably.

“Derek is trying to factory-reset the devices,” I said.

“Why would he do that now?” Marisol asked, her brow furrowing.

“Because he wants to sell them, or he is trying to use them wherever he is hiding,” I said.

I looked back at the PDF of the Power of Attorney on her computer screen.

The signature looked so much like mine that it made my stomach turn.

“We need to deal with this bank freeze first,” Marisol said, tapping her pen on the desk.

“How am I supposed to buy food?” I asked. “How do I pay you?”

“Do not worry about my fees right now,” Marisol said.

She stood up and walked to the window, looking out at the Miami skyline.
