James was shivering, his knees shaking so hard they knocked together.

“Dante, please,” James sobbed, raising his hands. “I didn’t want to do this. He forced me.”

Dante walked past Moretti without looking down at him.

He stopped three feet from James, his dark coat damp with the Chicago mist.

Two of Dante’s men emerged from the fog behind him.

They grabbed James by the arms, dragging him back from the edge of the pier.

“Please, Sophia, tell them!” James screamed, looking at me with terror in his eyes.

I turned my back on him.

“You took my life savings,” I said, my voice shaking but cold. “You left me when I was pregnant, and tonight you put our daughter in a car with a monster.”

“Sophia, please!”

“Take him away,” Dante ordered his men.

“Where are we taking him, Boss?” one of the men asked.

“The federal investigators have been waiting for the final links on the Moretti tax fraud and extortion cases,” Dante said.

“We have the files from his apartment,” the man replied.
