The Price of Protection and the Dancer Who Refused to Bend
His shoulders were rigid, and his face was completely pale.
“What do you mean, no response?” Dante growled into the receiver.
I sat up quickly, my blanket sliding to the floor.
“Dante?” I called out, my voice raspy from sleep. “What is happening?”
He didn’t answer me immediately, his eyes fixed on the floor as he listened to the person on the other end of the line.
“Send a team there now,” Dante ordered, then ended the call.
He turned to look at me, and the expression on his face made my stomach drop.
“Is it Lily?” I asked, my voice rising as I stood up. “Dante, tell me.”
“The guards at the safehouse where we sent Mrs. Patel and Lily are not answering their scheduled check-ins,” Dante said slowly.
My breath caught in my chest, and a wave of nausea hit me.
“No,” I whispered. “No, no, no.”
I grabbed my coat from the floor, my hands shaking so violently I could barely find the sleeves.
“Marcus is getting the car,” Dante said, walking over to grip my shoulders. “Sophia, stay calm.”
