“You brought this to my door,” I said, tears blurring my vision.

“I did,” he admitted.

“My interest in you made you a target.”

“If you leave this building alone, Lorenzo’s men will take you.”

“They will use you to get to me.”

I felt a cold sweat break out on the back of my neck.

The rain began to beat harder against the glass doors.

“I have to protect my baby,” I said.

“I know,” Dante said. “That is why you are coming with me to the penthouse.”

He turned to Victor, who was waiting by the door.

“Bring the child and the nanny here,” Dante ordered.

“Put guards on the entrance, the lobby, and the service elevator.”

“Nobody gets into this penthouse without my direct approval.”

Victor nodded once. “Yes, Boss.”

He slipped out of the room, his black leather shoes quiet on the thick carpet.

I sank into a chair, my legs too weak to hold my weight.

The smell of Dante’s expensive cologne mixed with the metallic scent of rain from the balcony.

“This is a nightmare,” I muttered, burying my face in my cold hands.
