The purple bruises left by Paul’s fingers were dark against my pale skin.
Dr. Hale pressed his fingers to my pulse, his touch professional and calm.
“Nothing is broken,” he said. “But you need ice, and you need to rest.”
Before I could answer, Vincent’s phone vibrated against the metal laminate of the counter.
He snatched it up instantly and put it on speaker.
“Vincent,” Marco’s voice came through, strained and fast. “The meeting is over. Paul just left.”
“Did you get the details?” Vincent asked.
“Corrado’s driver talked to one of our boys at the bar,” Marco said. “Paul made a deal. He gave Corrado the schedule for the Newark shipments.”
My heart hammered against my ribs.
“What did he get in return?” Vincent’s voice was dangerously quiet.
“His gambling debts are wiped clean,” Marco said. “And Corrado agreed to give him three men to help locate Lena.”
“Where are they going?” Vincent asked.
“They’re starting with her mother’s old apartment in Queens,” Marco said. “They think she went there first.”
“They’ll find it empty,” Vincent said. “But we can’t stay here long.”
