The video feed showed the private elevator lobby on the ground floor of the building.

A tall, broad-shouldered man in a dark wool overcoat stood directly in front of the security desk.

He was not wearing a mask, and he did not look hurried.

He looked directly into the camera lens with a cold, familiar smirk.

It was my father’s personal attorney, Arthur Vance.

Behind him, two men in dark suits stood near the heavy glass entrance doors of the building.

“He is not here to file a court petition,” Gabriel said, his voice dropping.

The intercom on the console buzzed, and the voice of the lobby guard came through the speaker.

“Mr. Vale, I have an Arthur Vance here,” the guard said, his voice sounding tight and nervous. “He says he has an urgent delivery for Ms. Bennett.”

“Did he specify what it is?” Gabriel asked into the transmitter.

“He says it is a personal message from her father,” the guard replied. “And he says it concerns the future of Vale Security.”

I looked at Gabriel, the realization hitting me instantly.
