The Price of Loyalty and the Letter That Exposed a Family
“This was just delivered to the lobby by a courier,” Marcus said, handing the envelope to Gabriel. “It is addressed to Claire.”
Gabriel checked the seal, then passed the envelope to me.
My name was written across the front in the stiff, calligraphic handwriting of the Bennett Foundation’s corporate secretary.
I broke the wax and pulled out a heavy sheet of cream-colored letterhead.
It was a formal resolution from the foundation’s board of directors.
“They want to appoint me interim Executive Director,” I said, reading the words aloud. “They want me to take my father’s place immediately.”
Gabriel leaned against the edge of the glass table, watching my face.
“It would give you complete control over the foundation’s remaining assets,” he noted.
“No,” I said, shaking my head. “It is a trap.”
I tossed the letter onto the table.
“They do not want me to reform the foundation,” I said. “They want a Bennett in the seat so the public thinks everything is under control.”
“If you take it, you will be buried in board meetings and public relations damage control,” Gabriel said.
