“But you signed the authorizations, Mr. King,” Marcus replied.

The courier looked uncomfortable, his eyes darting toward the open elevator.

“That will be all, Marcus,” I said.

The young man nodded quickly, stepped back into the elevator, and pressed the button.

The steel doors slid shut with a soft hiss.

The silence returned, heavier than before.

Elias stared at the screen, his fingers trembling slightly.

“It’s on the wire,” he said.

“What is?” I asked.

“The Justice Department just released a statement,” he said. “Daniel Carter has been indicted on twelve counts of wire fraud and grand larceny.”

He looked up at me, his eyes wide.

“They arrested him at his home in Greenwich two hours ago.”

I walked over to the window.

Below, the yellow cabs crawled through the wet streets like tiny beetles.

“It was only a matter of time,” I said.

“They are linking me to him, Ava,” Elias said.

He walked over to his desk and dropped the tablet onto the dark leather surface.

It landed with a dull thud.

“The press is calling it a shared conspiracy,” he said.
