The Price of Indifference and the Fall of Elias King
The office suddenly felt very small.
The glass walls seemed to press in on me.
“So,” Elias said, sliding the pen toward me once more. “Do you want to sign the papers and walk away with your two million? Or do you want to make Daniel Carter the richest man in New York?”
I looked at the pen, then at the envelope, and finally at Elias.
My phone buzzed in my bag.
The vibration felt like an electric shock against my hip.
I reached in and pulled it out.
The screen lit up with a message from an unknown number.
It was an image file.
I tapped it open.
It was a copy of a wire transfer receipt from three hours ago.
Ten million dollars had been deposited into a shell company account under my maiden name.
Below the image, a text message appeared.
*It’s done. Now finish him. – D.*
I stared at the screen of my phone.
The bright light hurt my eyes in the dim office.
The numbers on the wire transfer were clear, crisp, and devastating.
Ten million dollars.
