The Price of Indifference and the Fall of Elias King
“He did,” Daniel said. “And I helped him cover it up.”
The confession hung in the air between us, heavy and cold.
“Why are you telling me this now?” I asked.
“Because Elias has gone too far,” Daniel said, his eyes hardening. “He is going to bankrupt the company to push this European merger through.”
“And you want to stop him.”
“I want to save the company,” Daniel said. “And I want you to get what you deserve.”
He pushed the envelope closer to me.
“Take this to the meeting tomorrow,” Daniel said. “When he threatens to leave you with nothing, show him this.”
“He will know it came from you,” I said.
“It doesn’t matter,” Daniel replied. “By the time he figures out how to react, the board will already have the copies.”
I reached out and touched the rough paper of the envelope.
“You are risking a lot for me, Daniel.”
“I am risking it for the future of King Enterprises,” he said. “Elias is a disease. We need to cut him out.”
I pulled the envelope toward me and slid it into my tote bag.
