I poured her a cup of warm tea and sat down opposite her.
She placed the envelope between us.
The paper was worn at the edges, sealed with a strip of clear tape.
“What is in here, Rachel?” I asked.
“The real ledgers for the offshore shell companies,” she said.
She looked up, her eyes red-rimmed.
“My mother helped him set them up three years ago, before you even filed.”
“I thought Robert found all the accounts,” I said, my chest tightening.
“He found the ones in the Caribbean,” Rachel said.
“He didn’t find the European accounts, or the trust registered in Patricia’s maiden name.”
She reached out and tore the tape off the envelope.
A thick stack of bank statements and incorporation documents slid onto the table.
I picked up the top sheet, my eyes scanning the columns of numbers.

“Why are you giving me this now?” I asked.
Rachel looked down at her hands, tracing a pattern on the wooden tabletop.
“Because Daniel spent yesterday evening screaming at Vanessa about how he was going to strip the company dry before Monday,” she said.
