“He forgot the code was our anniversary.”

“Well, the anniversary he promised we would have.”

She rubbed her temples with her fingertips.

“There is more,” she said.

“He has a safe deposit box at the branch on 4th Street.”

“The key is in his office desk, behind the false bottom of the pencil drawer.”

“Inside that box is the deed to a property in Costa Rica.”

“He bought it six months ago.”

“Using company funds.”

Robert took notes on a small pad.

His face was grim but focused.

“This is exactly what we need, Vanessa,” Robert said.

“But we need you to sign an affidavit.”

“Our notary can meet us back at the office.”

Vanessa looked at the envelope in Robert’s hands.

“Will this keep him away from me?” she asked.

“He has a key to my apartment.”

“I’m staying at a motel under a false name, but I can’t live like that.”

“We will file an emergency restraining order on your behalf,” Robert said.

“My colleague handles domestic relations.”

“She will take your case today.”

“And we will cover the initial retainer as promised.”
