“A DNA test?” he asked.

“Yes,” I said. “Patricia doesn’t think the baby is Daniel’s.”

“That changes the leverage,” Robert said.

“How?” I asked.

“If Daniel realizes the child isn’t his, his motivation to protect Vanessa’s future disappears,” Robert said.

“He might stop trying to hide assets for her.”

“But he still hid them from me,” I said.

“Yes,” Robert said. “But right now, he is fighting a war on two fronts.”

I rubbed my temples.

“I just want this over, Robert,” I said.

“We are close, Claire,” he said. “The ledger you found is the key. I am filing the motion to reopen the asset discovery first thing in the morning.”

“What about the waiver?” I asked.

“Ignore it,” he said. “It’s a sign of absolute panic.”

“Get some sleep. I will call you after the filing.”

We hung up.

I walked down the hallway to the children’s room.

I opened the door a crack.

Ethan was snoring softly, his arm thrown over his stuffed bear.

Lily was curled up under her pink blanket.

I stood there for a long time, watching them breathe.
