“My god, Elizabeth.”

“If that gets out, the board will suspend you pending an investigation.”

“Even if you’re the victim.”

“I know,” I said.

“That’s why I have to get the evidence first.”

“Before they destroy it.”

“Or before they try to make it look like I was in on it.”

The elevator chimed, and the doors opened onto the quiet hallway of the administrative wing.

The carpeted floors muffled our footsteps.

“What are you going to do?” Mara asked, keeping her voice low as we walked toward my office.

“I need that folder,” I said.

“The physical loan papers.”

“My aunt’s house is empty right now.”

“She’s still at the police station being processed.”

“And Uncle Michael is probably trying to find a lawyer.”

“This is my only window.”

“You can’t go there alone,” Mara said, stopping me outside my office door.

“She attacked you yesterday.”

“If Michael or Daniel is there…”

“I have a key,” I said.

“I never gave it back after my grandfather died.”

“I’ll go in, get the folder, and leave.”

“It will take ten minutes.”

My phone buzzed in my hand.
