“And they’re going after Michael and Daniel for the cover-up,” I added.

Mara let out a breath that sounded like a laugh, though her face remained tense.

“Good,” she said. “They deserve it.”

“Daniel is my brother, Mara,” I said quietly.

“He chose his side when he helped them clean up your blood, Elizabeth,” she said.

I looked down at the polished linoleum floor of the lobby.

A drop of rain from the process server’s coat was drying near my shoe.

“I need to get to my office,” I said.

We walked in silence back through the double doors and toward the administrative wing.

The smell of bleach and floor wax hung heavy in the air.

Every nurse and resident who passed us seemed to look at me a second too long.

I wondered how much of the rumor mill had already reached the clinical floors.

We reached the quiet hallway of the executive suite.

My administrative assistant, Sarah, looked up from her desk with wide eyes.

“Dr. Morgan,” Sarah said. “Your brother is on line two.”

“He has called four times in the last ten minutes.”
