I sat at a long glass table opposite the buyer’s representative, a middle-aged woman named Sarah.

Arthur sat to my left, reviewing the final closing disclosure documents.

The house had sold for two point five million dollars.

“The liens on the property have been settled,” Arthur explained, pointing to the figures on the page. “The remaining proceeds will be split according to the court order.”

“And my three hundred thousand?” I asked.

“It has been carved out of the sale proceeds as a priority claim,” Arthur said. “The wire is already pending.”

Sarah pushed a stack of papers toward me, offering a heavy silver pen.

“Please sign on the highlighted lines, Ms. Vance,” she said.

I picked up the pen and signed my name.

With each signature, I felt a weight lifting from my shoulders.

I was no longer Emily Carter; I was Emily Vance, the woman I had been before I let Daniel ruin my life.

“The wire has been initiated,” Sarah said, checking her tablet. “You should see the funds in your account within the hour.”

“Thank you,” I said.
