Daniel did not answer his mother.

He was staring at me.

His eyes were wide, dark with a mixture of anger and panic.

“You took this from my desk,” Daniel said, his voice a low hiss.

“The source of the documents is not the issue,” Arthur said. “The accuracy of the data is.”

“This is highly confidential banking data,” Miller said, trying to salvage the situation. “It was obtained illegally.”

“It was retrieved from a shared family office in a home my client still legally co-owns,” Arthur replied calmly.

“And we have already forwarded copies to the federal forensic audit division.”

Richard stood up so fast his chair scraped loudly against the hardwood border of the room.

“You did what?” Richard demanded.

“The federal authorities have had these files since nine o’clock this morning,” Arthur said.

Richard looked at his son.

The anger in his eyes turned into something else.

It was pure, cold dread.

“You foolish boy,” Richard whispered to Daniel.

“Father, I can explain,” Daniel said, reaching out.

“Don’t touch me,” Richard said.

He looked at the papers on the table as if they were covered in poison.
