I opened the PDF Arthur had sent.

I turned the screen toward her.

“This is a preliminary agreement from my attorney,” I said. “It states that if you provide the physical ledger, testify truthfully under oath at the deposition, and return all gifts bought with my money, we will not name you in the lawsuit.”

Sophia leaned forward, squinting at the small screen.

She read the words slowly, her finger tracing the text on the glass.

“Is this legally binding?” she asked.

“It is a formal letter of intent,” I said. “Arthur Vance will draft the final agreement tomorrow. But you have to sign this copy tonight, and you have to hand over the ledger now.”

“And Daniel won’t find out until the deposition?” she asked, her voice trembling.

“Daniel won’t know a thing until he is sitting in that conference room,” I said.

I watched her face.

She was terrified of Daniel, but she was more terrified of going to prison for conspiracy.

She reached into her coat pocket and pulled out a silver pen.
