It was a heavy, braided piece.
I recognized it.
It was from a boutique in Chicago where Daniel often went for “business trips.”
“He bought that with the money my father left me,” I said, my voice cutting through the quiet space between us.
Sophia quickly pulled her sleeve down, hiding the gold.

Sophia unzipped her large leather bag.
She reached inside and pulled out a black, cloth-bound book.
It was small, about the size of a novel, with a thick elastic band keeping it shut.
“He kept this in the safe at the apartment,” she said, her hand resting on the cover. “He thought I didn’t know the combination. But he wrote it on the back of a receipt in his wallet.”
She slid the book across the wooden table.
