“The original digital files are in a secure cloud storage account held by my attorney.”

Richard sank back down into his leather chair, the leather groaning under his weight.

“What do you want, Emily?” he asked, his voice barely audible over the rain.

“I want what is mine,” I said.

“And I want you to stay out of my way while I take it.”

“If the police are here for Daniel, he needs a defense team,” Margaret insisted, grabbing Richard’s shoulder.

“We have to call Arthur Vance. He handles all our corporate matters.”

“Arthur Vance is a tax lawyer, Margaret,” Richard said, his eyes still fixed on me.

“Daniel needs a white-collar criminal specialist. And those do not come cheap.”

“Then we pay them,” Margaret said.

“We use the trust fund. We use the equity in the commercial properties.”

“If you use one dime of Carter money to fund Daniel’s defense, those papers go to the district attorney,” I said.

The room went completely silent.

Margaret stared at me as if I had spoken in a foreign language.
