The morning air was damp and smelled of impending rain.

Sarah Jenkins was already at her desk, a tall stack of folders between us.

She looked up as I entered, her glasses sliding down her nose.

“You look like you didn’t sleep,” she said, gesturing to the leather chair opposite her.

“Daniel was on the phone at two in the morning,” I said, sitting down.

“He was trying to move money.”

Sarah smiled, a cold, professional expression.

“He tried,” she said, tapping a freshly printed document on her desk.

“But he was too late.”

She handed me a three-page document bearing the county court’s official red stamp.

“We got the emergency injunction signed at 4:30 PM yesterday,” she explained.

“The freeze on Carter Strategic Design LLC went into effect at midnight.”

“So his transfer didn’t go through?” I asked.

“The bank flagged it and blocked it,” Sarah said.

“He attempted to wire four hundred and eighty thousand dollars from the corporate operating account at 2:14 AM.”

She leaned forward, resting her elbows on the dark wood of her desk.
