“She did this!” Barbara screamed, pointing a manicured finger at my face. “She is a liar! She ruined my son’s career because she could not pass her defense!”

“Your son is currently being detained at his apartment, Mrs. Hayes,” Vance said calmly. “And we have his phone.”

Barbara froze.

Her eyes flicked from me to the blue folder in Vance’s hand.

“Hunter had nothing to do with this,” she whispered, her voice suddenly losing its venom. “He was only doing what his father asked.”

“We have the emails, Barbara,” I said. “I saw the Swiss accounts.”

“You don’t know anything,” she hissed. “You were a charity case. We gave you a name.”

“You stole my life,” I said.

From the hallway behind the reception desk, Arthur Hayes emerged.

He was wearing his usual tailored grey suit, but his tie was slightly crooked, and his silver hair was messy.

Two federal agents walked on either side of him.

He looked at me, his eyes cold and empty.

“Evelyn,” he said, his voice remarkably steady. “This is a misunderstanding. We can resolve this privately.”
