The Price of a Perfect Marriage and the Silent Rebuild of My Worth
I let those words wash over me.
Ten to fifteen years.
It was a lifetime.
But it was the price he had chosen to pay.
“He will want a deal,” I said.
“He will try to use whatever assets he has left to pay for a defense.”
“He has no assets left,” Arthur said.
“The firm will strip his equity.”
“The government will freeze his personal accounts by tomorrow morning.”
“He only has one option to avoid maximum security,” Arthur said.
He looked at me, his eyes sharp.
“He has to cooperate.”
“And he has to sign over whatever is left of his estate to you before the government puts a lien on it.”
“A post-nuptial settlement,” I said.
“Immediately,” Arthur said.
“If he transfers the marital assets to you as part of a divorce or separation agreement before the indictment is unsealed, you might keep the house.”
“But he has to sign it voluntarily.”
“He has to do it tonight.”
I felt a cold knot tighten in my stomach.
This was the moment.
The window was incredibly small.
“I have the paperwork ready,” I said.
