“We need to vote,” Arthur said.

“Arthur, wait,” Ethan said, taking a step forward. “We can manage this. We can issue a statement.”

“The firm is not going down for your greed, Ethan,” Arthur said.

He picked up a black fountain pen.

“I call for an immediate vote on the resolution of termination.”

“Under Section Nine of the corporate charter,” Arthur continued, “gross misconduct and regulatory investigation constitute grounds for immediate termination for cause.”

“You can’t do this without a formal hearing,” Ethan said.

His hand shook as he reached for the back of a chair to steady himself.

“We are holding the hearing now,” Arthur said.

“All in favor of immediate termination of Ethan Lawson, effective this second.”

Arthur raised his hand.

The two board members at the end of the table raised their hands without hesitation.

“The vote is unanimous,” Arthur said.

He looked down at the paper.

“Your employment is terminated.”

“Your stock options are voided under the clawback provision.”

“Your severance package is forfeited.”

“You are no longer an officer of this company.”

Ethan stared at him.

The silence in the room was thick.
