“I don’t think we should be speaking.”

“We need to,” I said.

“Ethan is planning to sign a document that will affect your future as well as mine.”

“I don’t know what you mean,” she said.

Her voice sounded strained, as if she were crying.

“He told me he was handling everything.”

“He told me he was going to take care of me.”

“Ethan takes care of himself,” I said.

“Did he tell you about the settlement he is trying to force me to sign?”

“He said he was giving you a fair share,” Lila said.

“He said you were trying to take his company.”

“He is offering me two hundred thousand dollars,” I said.

“And he is threatening to frame me for embezzlement if I do not take it.”

There was a long silence on the phone.

I could hear the sound of traffic in the background where she was.

“He wouldn’t do that,” she said, but her voice lacked conviction.

“He told me he had millions in his personal account.”

“He told me we were going to buy a place in the city.”
