“Ethan has been a brilliant asset to the firm,” he said. “But this is a severe breach of trust. And a clear policy violation.”

“He used your trust to fund his affair,” I said.

Arthur tapped his fingers on the table.

“I need to keep these documents, Clara,” he said.

“You can keep those copies,” I said. “The originals are in a safe deposit box.”

He nodded, understanding the silent boundary I was drawing.

“I will have our compliance officer quietly look into these specific ledger entries,” Arthur said. “Without mentioning your name.”

“Thank you, Arthur,” I said.

“I am so sorry, my dear,” he said, reaching across the table to squeeze my hand. “You did not deserve any of this.”

“I am just doing what is necessary,” I said.

We sat in silence for a few minutes as the waitress brought my tea.

After Arthur left, I sat in the booth alone for a while, watching the steam rise from my cup.

The first step was taken.

I got up, paid the bill, and walked back out into the cold morning air.
