The Price of a Marriage Built on Whispered Lies and Broken Promises
Daniel didn’t speak. He just stared at the phone.
“Daniel, are you there?” Clara cried. “They know about the Swiss accounts. They have the signatures. We need to leave. Now.”
I stepped closer to the desk, looking down at the speaker.
“He’s not going anywhere, Clara,” I said.
There was a sudden, sharp intake of breath on the other end of the line.
“Emily?” Clara whispered. “What are you doing there?”
“Watching the end of your marriage,” I said. “And yours.”
“Emily, listen to me,” Clara said, her voice turning frantic. “Daniel lied to you about everything. He told me you knew about the money. He said you were the one who suggested using the offshore accounts.”
I looked at Daniel.
He wouldn’t meet my eyes. He just stared at the scattered pens on the floor.
“I know what he did,” I said to the phone. “And I know what you did.”
“We can help each other,” Clara pleaded. “I have documents. I have emails showing Daniel was the one who authorized the transfers. If you help me, I can make sure you get your fair share of the estate before the government freezes everything.”
