“You’re bluffing,” he said.
“Am I?” I asked. “Marcus is the one who gave them to me.”
At the mention of Marcus’s name, Daniel’s composure finally began to slip.
A small muscle in his jaw twitched.
“Marcus is a disgruntled employee,” Daniel said, his voice rising slightly. “His word means nothing to the authorities.”
“But these bank records mean everything,” Clara said, her voice suddenly cold and clear.
She looked at Daniel with a look of pure hatred.
“You were going to let me go to prison for this,” Clara said.
“Clara, be reasonable,” Daniel said, stepping toward her. “We can still manage this. I can hire the best defense team in the state for you.”
“To defend me against charges you manufactured?” Clara laughed, a sharp, bitter sound. “I don’t think so.”
She picked up her handbag from the floor.
“What are you doing?” Daniel asked, his voice losing its calm veneer.
“I’m calling my lawyer,” Clara said, pulling her phone from her bag. “And then I’m calling the assistant U.S. Attorney.”
“Clara, stop,” Daniel said, taking another step toward her. “If you do this, we both go down.”
