“What about it?” Daniel demanded.

“The board received the full transcript five minutes ago,” Marcus said.

He held up his phone so Daniel could see the screen.

“Arthur Vance has already called an emergency meeting for eight o’clock,” Marcus said.

“They are discussing a temporary suspension of your voting rights,” Marcus added.

Clara’s face went entirely white, the perfect makeup on her cheeks suddenly looking like chalk.

“That’s impossible,” Clara said, her voice shaking slightly. “The board doesn’t have the authority without a majority.”

“They have the majority if the compliance committee signs off,” Marcus said.

He looked at me, then back at Daniel.

“The audio mentions the offshore accounts in Nicosia,” Marcus said. “The ones we swore didn’t exist.”

The man with the bolt cutters hesitated, his hands lowering the heavy iron tool.

The room seemed to grow colder as the autumn wind rattled the loose pane in the high window.

“You did this,” Daniel said, turning back to me, his hands curling into fists.

“No,” I said, looking him dead in the eye. “You did this when you signed the papers.”
