Luke clenched his fist around the key.
He looked at me, his eyes dark with a mixture of guilt and determination.
“I have to go, Elena,” he said softly.
I didn’t want him to leave, but I knew he had to.
“Be careful,” I whispered.
He leaned down, pressing his forehead against mine for a brief second.
“I will,” he murmured.
“Marco, let’s go,” Luke said, turning toward the door.
Just as Luke reached for the handle, the screen of his phone lit up in his pocket.
He pulled it out, staring at the flashing screen.
His face went completely pale.
“What is it?” Marco asked.
Luke held up the phone so Marco could see the caller ID.
It was a number we both knew too well.
The call was coming from the executive suite at Mercer Holdings.
Luke’s finger hovered over the green button as the phone vibrated against his palm.
Luke slid his thumb across the screen and put the call on speaker.
The voice that came through was cold, dry, and instantly recognizable.
