“They saw us,” Nadia said, her voice rising.
“It doesn’t matter,” Luke said, his eyes fixed on the floor indicator.
“Once we are in the garage, they can’t stop us.”
“Marco is waiting with the SUV.”
He looked down at me, his thumb tracing a circle on my shoulder.
“You’re going to Queens with Nadia,” he said.
“I have to go to the Mercer building.”
“The board meeting starts in forty minutes.”
“Luke,” I said, holding his lapel. “If you sign those papers, you lose everything you built.”
“I built it for us,” he said, his voice flat and steady.
“If I don’t have you, the company is just a collection of glass and steel.”
“I will sign their papers. I will let Arthur believe he has broken me.”
“And while he is gloating, Marco will secure Vance.”
The elevator bumped to a halt.
The doors opened to the dark, concrete expanse of the basement garage.
A black SUV stood twenty yards away, its headlights cut but the engine idling.
Marco was standing by the driver’s side door, his hand resting near his jacket pocket.
