The car slowed down as Marco negotiated a sharp turn onto Ninth Avenue.
“I’m sorry, Luke,” I whispered, my eyelids growing heavier. “I was so scared.”
Luke pulled me closer to his chest, wrapping his arms tightly around me.
“You don’t ever apologize to me for that,” he said into my hair.
“My father is a monster,” he muttered.
“But we are going to fix this,” he added. “I promise you.”
The headlights of oncoming traffic flashed through the tinted windows, illuminating his pale face.
“There is something else,” I said, my voice growing weaker as the fatigue crawled back up my limbs.
“What is it?” Luke asked.
“I think I was followed,” I whispered.
“Before I went to the storage unit,” I said. “A silver sedan.”
Marco spoke up from the driver’s seat.
“Boss, we have another problem,” Marco said.
Luke looked up, his eyes meeting Marco’s in the mirror.
“What?” Luke asked.
“My contact at the hospital just sent an alert,” Marco said.
