The Price of a Last Name and the Bloodline We Rebuild
“Who is Arthur going to believe, Luke?” Vivian asked, tilting her head. “His loyal daughter who has run his charity foundations for a decade, or the ex-wife who fled the state the moment the auditors started asking questions?”
The rain outside picked up, drumming furiously against the metal roof.
My head began to spin, a sudden wave of dizziness washing over me.
I gripped Luke’s arm to keep my balance.
“Elena?” Luke whispered, looking back at me with instant concern.
“I’m fine,” I lied, though my breath was shallow and hot.
“We are going to the board,” Luke said, turning back to Vivian. “We have the forensic paper trail now, Vivian. Marco’s team traced the routing numbers of the receiving accounts back to your shell company in Panama.”
Vivian’s expression hardened for the first time.
The amusement left her eyes, replaced by a cold, calculating stillness.
“You think you can just hand those over to Arthur and everything will be fine?” Vivian asked.
“It clears Elena,” Luke said. “That is all I care about.”
