“Dr. Hale gave them the medical records,” Dominic said. “She gave them the signatures showing how you falsified the custody evaluation and paid off Judge Whitmore.”

The lawyer beside Caterina took a step away from her, lowering his satellite phone.

“Mrs. Valenti, we need to leave now,” he muttered.

“Stand still,” she snapped at him.

She turned her gaze back to Dominic, her expression turning desperate.

“I built this family,” she said, her voice rising. “Your father left us with nothing but debts and enemies, and I made the Valenti name feared in this city.”

“You destroyed this family,” Dominic said. “You forced me to abandon my wife.”

“She was a distraction,” Caterina spat. “She would have made you soft.”

“She made me human,” Dominic said.

The sound of distant sirens began to echo across the tarmac, high and piercing over the hum of the city.

Blue and red lights flickered against the wet pavement in the distance, speeding through the airport security gates.

Caterina looked toward the gates, her face pale in the flashing lights.
