“What do we do?”

Marco didn’t answer immediately.

He navigated the sedan through a yellow light, his eyes darting to the side mirrors.

“We need to get you out of the city,” Marco said.

“But Dominic is still there,” I said.

“He can handle himself,” Marco said.

“Caterina won’t hurt him.”

“But she will use the police to find you.”

Lucia looked up at me, her eyes glossy with unshed tears.

“Mommy?” she asked.

“Are we going home?”

“Not yet, sweetie,” I said, trying to keep my voice steady.

“We are going on a little trip.”

“I want my books,” she whispered.

I squeezed her tight, burying my face in her shoulder.

My mind was racing.

Caterina had the judges, the police, and the money.

What did I have?

I had a box of medical records and an ex-husband who had just realized his entire life was a lie.

The sedan slowed down as we approached a red light.

Suddenly, Marco’s radio crackled to life.

A voice came through the static, urgent and low.

“Marco, do you copy?”

Marco reached for the receiver.
