The top page bore the official letterhead of the Valenti Medical Clinic.

“Five years ago,” Miriam said, tears welling in her eyes. “Your fertility reports. Caterina forced me to change them.”

“What do you mean?” I asked, my thumb tracing the black ink of my own name on the page.

“She told Dominic you were sterile, that you had lied to him about wanting a family,” Miriam said.

“And to me?” I asked, the old pain blooming in my chest.

“She told you that Dominic’s family would destroy your career and put your father in prison if you didn’t sign the divorce papers,” Miriam whispered. “She had Judge Whitmore draw up the legal threats.”

I looked down at the paper in my hands.

It was a medical report showing my tests were completely normal.

Attached to it was a handwritten letter on Caterina Valenti’s personal stationery.

The handwriting was elegant, written in blue ink.

*Sign the alteration, Miriam, or your license is gone by morning. Whitmore has already signed the order.*

My stomach turned.

Dominic appeared in the doorway of the back hall, his eyes locking onto Miriam.
