Julian didn’t look at his lawyer. He was still staring at me.
“I did it for Harrison,” Julian said, his voice cracking. “To make sure he had a legacy.”
“You did it to hide the money from the divorce court,” I said.
“Elena, please,” Julian said, stepping toward me.
Lydia stepped between us, her hand raised.
“Do not approach my client, Mr. Blackwood,” Lydia said. “Martin, we are going to file for an immediate emergency hearing. Your client has committed perjury and hidden assets under oath.”
Martin sighed, rubbing his temples. “I know.”
He looked at Julian with a mixture of pity and anger.
“I cannot represent you in this matter anymore, Julian,” Martin said. “This is a conflict of interest. You lied to me.”
“Martin, wait,” Julian said.
But Martin was already walking down the corridor, his briefcase clutched in his hand.
Julian watched him go, his shoulders slumping.
He looked incredibly small in the dim light of the storage unit.
“Elena,” Julian whispered. “They’re going to take everything.”
“You took everything from us first,” I said.
I turned and walked away.
