The Price of a Flawless Lie and the Family That Vanished
I turned up the baseboard heater, which hummed loudly as it struggled against the draft.
I fed Harrison and gave him his medicine.
Within an hour, he was asleep on the double bed, his breathing much clearer.
I sat at the small table near the window, watching the fog roll over the wooden pier.
My phone buzzed on the table.
It was a text from Lydia.
“The board just locked Julian out of his office,” the message read.
“He tried to transfer five million to a bank in Cyprus this morning.”
“They caught it.”
I stared at the screen, my fingers cold.
Julian was trying to drain what he could before the audit froze everything.
My phone rang a minute later.
I answered immediately. “Lydia?”
“It’s worse than we thought, Elena,” she said, her voice tight.
“Did he get the money out?” I asked.
“No,” Lydia said. “The compliance officer flagged the transaction because of the pending subpoena notice we served them.”
“What is Julian doing now?”
“He left the building,” she said. “Martin Bell says he’s not answering his calls.”
“Is he coming after me?” I asked.
