The Price of a False Legacy and the Secret That Rebuilt a Dynasty
“Let’s go,” I told Elena, ignoring him.
We got into the back seat of her sedan, and she immediately locked the doors.
The warmth of the car’s heater hit my face, making my skin sting.
Through the tinted glass, I watched Harrison walk slowly toward the idling Mercedes at the end of the alley.
He stopped at the passenger side window.
The window rolled down a few inches, releasing a small puff of white exhaust from the car’s tailpipe.
Harrison stood there for a moment, talking to whoever was inside.
Then, he opened the door and got in.
The Mercedes immediately shifted into reverse, its tires gripping the ice as it backed out of the alley and disappeared into the city traffic.
“Are you okay?” Elena asked, turning around from the front seat to look at me.
“I’m fine,” I said, though my hands were shaking as I pulled off my gloves.
“He’s desperate,” Elena said. “Desperate people do stupid things. He’s going to go back to Patricia.”
“She won’t forgive him for taking that drive,” I said. “Even if he gives it back to her.”
