Her shoulders were shaking.

She looked incredibly small.

And then she turned to look at me.

The sorrow on her face vanished, replaced by a cold, sharp anger.

“You did this,” she hissed.

“You brought Lauren here.”

“You ruined this family.”

“Get out,” I said.

I pointed to the open doorway.

“I told you to leave, Mom.”

“I want you out of my house.”

“Your sister is going to be on the street because of you,” she said.

She stepped closer to me, her finger pointing at my face.

“She has nothing.”

“And now your father is going to ruin us.”

“You did this to us.”

“Megan did this to herself,” I said.

“And you helped her.”

“Get out of my apartment before I call the police.”

She stared at me for a long moment.

Her eyes were full of hatred.

I had never seen her look at me that way before.

She snatched her purse from the counter.

She didn’t say another word.

She walked out into the hallway, her wet boots leaving a trail of gray water behind her.

I pulled the heavy wooden door shut.
