I hurried up the grand staircase, with Ryker and Clara following close behind.

The door to the playroom was slightly ajar.

I pushed it open gently.

Lily and Owen were sitting on the thick rug, building a tall tower out of wooden blocks.

Owen’s worn teddy bear sat on a small velvet chair nearby, guarding the construction site.

When the door clicked, both children looked up.

Lily’s quiet, observant eyes searched my face.

Owen immediately stood up, stepping slightly in front of his sister.

I knelt down on the carpet and opened my arms.

“It’s okay, sweethearts,” I said, my voice soft. “You don’t have to worry anymore.”

Clara stepped into the room behind me.

When Lily saw her aunt, her small face lit up with a recognition that broke my heart.

“Auntie Clara?” Lily whispered.

Clara dropped to her knees, tears streaming down her face as she reached out.

“Oh, my babies,” Clara cried.

Lily ran forward, throwing her small arms around Clara’s neck.

Owen hesitated for a second, looking at Ryker.

Ryker gave him a firm, reassuring nod.
