We slid through, the branches of the overgrown pine trees scraping against the sides of the SUV.

Once we reached the narrow county road, Marco killed the lights completely for a few seconds.

The darkness was absolute, save for the white glow of the snow on the ground.

“We are out,” Marco said, turning the lights back to a low beam. “But we are not safe yet.”

My phone buzzed in my lap.

I grabbed it, expecting a text from Ryker.

Instead, it was an alert from a local news outlet.

I tapped the link, and a headline flashed across the screen.

*Billionaire Ryker Steel Accused of Custody Interference in High-Profile Vale Case.*

“They already leaked it to the press,” I said, showing the screen to Marco.

“Marissa is fast,” Marco said, his eyes locked on the road. “She wants to ruin him publicly before we can get to the court.”

“Can we still reach the cabin?” I asked.

“If the roads stay clear enough for me to keep our speed up,” Marco said. “But if a state trooper pulls us over, we are done.”
