The Orphans of Gate Seventeen and the Fight for Their Future
“There is a car parked in her driveway.”
“It belongs to Marissa’s lawyer.”
I showed the screen to Ryker.
He grabbed his coat from the chair.
“Stay here with the kids,” he said.
“Do not open the door for anyone.”
“Not even the police.”
“Where are you going?” I asked, panic rising in my chest.
“To Indiana,” he said.
Before he could reach the door, the security system at the front gate chimed.
A flashing red light appeared on the wall panel.
A vehicle had just bypassed the outer security barrier.
We both froze, staring at the screen.
The screen showed a dark SUV speeding up the winding driveway.
“It is Marco’s car,” Ryker said, his hand hovering over the control panel.
He hit the intercom button.
“Marco, what is going on?” Ryker demanded.
“I have Clara,” Marco’s voice crackled through the speaker, tight and urgent.
“We had to move fast,” Marco said. “Marissa’s lawyer was trying to force her into a car.”
The SUV screeched to a halt on the gravel outside the front entrance.
Ryker threw the heavy oak door open before Marco could even ring the bell.
