She placed the red folder onto the desk, scattering a few of the forensic reports Marco had laid out.

“It’s about Daniel Vale’s will,” Sarah said.

She unclasped the folder and pulled out a stapled document with a blue legal seal.

The paper looked crisp, but the photocopied signatures at the bottom were slightly blurred.

“We managed to get the unredacted filings from the county archives just before they closed,” she said.

I leaned closer, looking at the faded ink of the signatures.

“Daniel Arthur Vale,” I read aloud, tracing the name with my finger.

“Yes,” Sarah said, pointing a manicured finger at a paragraph near the bottom of page twelve.

“This is the primary trust agreement that funds the entire Vale estate.”

“The one Marissa has been using to pay off her personal debts,” Ryker said.

“Exactly,” Sarah said.

“But look at subsection four, paragraph B.”

Ryker leaned over the desk, his eyes scanning the dense legal jargon.

I watched his face go completely still, the color draining from his cheeks.

“What does it say?” I asked, looking between them.
