Elias took a step toward her, his cane clicking against the floorboards.
“Arthur wanted to correct a mistake, Miranda,” Elias said.
“The Sterling fortune was built on my family’s land and my family’s labor.”
“He knew that.”
“He wanted to make it right before he died.”
“And you spent ten years pretending his last will did not exist,” Elias said.
The room fell into a heavy, suffocating silence.
The only sound was the rhythmic ticking of the grandfather clock in the corner.
Miranda looked at the papers, then at her son, then at the investigators.
The tightness in her jaw began to slacken.
The polished facade she had worn for decades was showing its first real cracks.
She reached out and touched the edge of the blue ledger.
“I did it for the family,” Miranda whispered.
“I did it for you, Julian.”
“You were too young to lose everything.”
Julian walked back a step, away from her hand.
“By lying to me?” Julian asked.
“By making me a partner in a theft?”
“It was not a theft,” Miranda said, her voice growing sharper.
“It was preservation.”
