I recognized her name from the hospital directory near the elevators.

“We are currently looking at the donor compliance portal from five years ago,” Dr. Aris said.

Richard’s eyes narrowed slightly, though his face remained otherwise blank.

He did not reply.

“I have the server logs open,” Ethan said, his voice coming through clearer now, as if he had pulled the phone closer. “I know what you and Mother did.”

“You are wasting your time with old administrative files, Ethan,” Richard said.

He picked up the small leather folder he had placed on my table.

“I am looking at the digital signatures on the wire transfer receipts,” Ethan said.

My heart began to beat faster, the monitor beside my bed ticking upward in speed.

I looked at the screen, watching the numbers climb.

“The ones that supposedly showed Hannah took five million dollars to leave Chicago,” Ethan continued.

“Those records were verified by our family attorneys,” Richard said.

He did not look at me.

He kept his eyes fixed on the small red light flashing on the telephone.
