The Ledger of Secrets That Cost My Husband His Empire
I stared at the blue ink until the words blurred.
“Claire?” Liam asked, his hand coming down on my shoulder. “What does it say?”
I handed him the slip of paper.
He read it quickly, his forehead creasing as he looked from the note to the brass key.
“What code?” he asked, his voice low and cautious.
“The encryption key to the off-the-books ledger,” I said, my voice barely a whisper.
“The one Ethan was looking for?”
“The one I hid before the crash,” I said. “I thought I lost the memory of it in the trauma.”
I looked down at the brass key in my palm.
“But I didn’t lose it,” I said. “I buried it.”
“Where is this address?” Liam asked, squinting at the paper.
“It’s the old cabin near the reservoir,” I said. “My grandfather’s place.”
“We should go,” Liam said. “Now, before Ethan’s people realize what that courier just delivered.”
We walked out of the hospital lobby and into the cold autumn air.
The sky was a heavy, bruised gray, and a sharp wind blew dead leaves across the asphalt.
